Laurel Church of Christ celebrates centennial with music
Written by Susan Alexander
Knoxville, TN - A Sunday afternoon singing of hymns spanning a century will highlight Laurel Church of Christ's 100th anniversary celebration on Sunday, Nov. 6. The concert is open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. at the church, 3457 Kington Pike.
Among the old favorites on the programs are "Love Lifted Me" and "I Come to the Garden Alone," both written in 1912; "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" from 1923; "I'll Fly Away" from 1932; "How Great Thou Art" from 1949; "Because He Lives" from 1971; and "Blessed Be Your Name" from 2002.
Dr. Jerry Rushford, a religion professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., will speak about the hymns periodically throughout the program, and will also lead a Sunday School class at 9 a.m. on "Rediscovering the Power of Forgotten Hymns."
Following the Celebration Worship Service at 10:15 a.m., a catered luncheon will be held at noon. Following the singing, a cake reception will begin at 4 p.m. Reservations are requested for the luncheon by calling the church at 865-524-1122 or online at www.laurelcc.org.
Laurel Church of Christ was founded with four members in 1911 and established its first meeting house in 1913 on North Broadway. In 1928, it moved to the corner of Laurel Avenue and 17th Street, and at that point it came to be known as the Laurel Avenue Church of Christ. The congregation moved to its present location in 1968.
